The Stephenson Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) Memorial commemorates the nation’s first veteran’s advocacy group and its founder Civil War surgeon Dr. Benjamin F. Stephenson (1823-1871). The Memorial, located in Washington, DC’s Indiana Plaza, was designed by architects Rankin, Kellogg and Crane, and completed in 1909. The 25-foot-tall, three-sided structure is constructed of granite blocks, with a pyramidal stone on top. It is adorned with four bronze reliefs and several smaller plaques by sculptor John Massey Rhind (1860-1936). One relief is a portrait of Stephenson. The three larger than life-size allegorical figures depict Fraternity, Loyalty, and Charity. The Memorial was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.

Kreilick Conservation, LLC was retained by the National Park Service in September 2017 to conserve the Memorial. Conservation treatment included washing and re-waxing of the sculptural bronze figures, and cleaning, repair, and repointing of the granite pedestal. The treatment was performed from October through December of 2017.
